IX.7.11 Pompeii. May 2005. Entrance doorway, looking north on Via dell’Abbondanza.

On the plaster of the high zoccolo/plinth, in the front section of the west wall where the described findings below were made, two small graffitied inscriptions were read:

IX.7.11 Pompeii. Graffiti Iucundus.

And immediately to the right –

IX.7.11 Pompeii. Graffiti XIII K.

IX.7.11 Pompeii.

Discovered 1912 to the left of the entrance at a depth from 1.70m down to the threshold level.

Corroded bronze statuette 18 cm high, discovered with a bronze statuette of a dog, and a naked cupid with the attributes of Hercules.

Kuivalainen describes –

A naked man stands with his weight on his left foot, with the right leg crossed. His abdominal and pectoral muscles are marked; he looks straight ahead, his wreathed hair is curly and drawn back in a bun; he rests his right hand on top of his head and leans with his right elbow on a herm; in the middle of his shoulder blades there is a tang for attachment. The bearded hip-herm wears a short chlamys across his torso.

Kuivalainen comments –

This is a unique Pompeian instance, with Bacchus leaning on a herm depicting Silenus. His more usual support was either a short column or Silenus himself. The legs crossed position is rare in Pompeii but is known from the wall painting from the Villa dei Misteri (F19). …………………………

Bronze statuette of a naked cupid with the attributes of Hercules, standing on a rectangular base, resting his right hand on a club, gripping a skyphos with his left hand, with the lion skin on his left shoulder.
